Chairman’s Statement

This year is 18 years since the founding of Hong Kong General Chamber of Textiles, a well-running platform has been established for the communication and cooperation among the greater China region. In recent years, The Chamber has signed Memorandum of Understanding with major international organizations in the industry, such as American Apparel and Footwear Association (AAFA) and International Apparel Federation (IAF). In this way we spread our influences to North American, Europe and other regions.

We keep a great tradition in The Chamber- all the previous chairmen are supporting and caring for the Chamber. I am truly honored to have your kindness and be entrusted with this post. I will carry forward this tradition and work diligently with members of the Board to play our part in the development of the industry.

For many years, textiles and apparel industry in Mainland and Hong Kong is faced with the challenge of transformation and upgrade. Institutions such as Hong Kong Research Institutes of Textiles and Apparel, Clothing Industry Training Authority, are working industriously and have initiated projects with great potential. However, support from the government is bit lagging behind, and effects of R&D projects are yet to be seen. Our honorable guests tonight include representatives from: China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textile and Apparel, China Knitting Industrial Association, Commerce and Economic Development Bureau of HKSAR, as well as other related departments. We also have distinguished guests from institutions of our local industry: Textile Council of Hong Kong, Federation of Hong Kong Garment Manufacturers, Hong Kong Intimate Apparel Industries’ Association, The Hong Kong Association of Textile Bleachers, Dyers, Printers and Finisher, as well as other organizations. I sincerely hope that Mainland and Hong Kong can strengthen the cooperation in areas of R&D, innovation, professional training, etc., in order to complement our advantages. I also look forward that more companies and manufacturers will work with us to put more R&D projects into practice, so that their effects can be exerted fully. Hong Kong General Chamber of Textiles will organize and co-organize a series of industrial study and research visits to uncover more business opportunities for all the industry practitioners.

Dear friends, I truly believe Hong Kong’s textiles and apparel industry is not a “sunset” industry. For the foremost reason, we are looking at the market in Mainland with a medium level consumer population of more than 300 million people. According to statistics from National Development and Reform Commission, middle class population in China will increase to 600 million in the coming decade. This enormous market holds vast space for exploration. Thus, we should well equip ourselves for the wonderful challenges and upcoming opportunities, embrace the Industry 4.0 era when capital, talents and technology are the focuses of competition.

Chairman
